    With the combustion method according to ISO 2144, DIN 54370, TAPPI T 413 and 211, which is traditionally applied in the paper industry, the total content and a few selected individual fillers can only be determined through an extremely time- and energy-consuming and in routine operation relatively inaccurate combustion of the samples at different temperatures (+/- 5%, operator dependent!). The combustion method is also disadvantageous due to its destructive measuring procedure.

    By the use of the emtec ACA Ash Content Analyzer with its new and innovative measuring principle the total ash content (fillers and pigments), but also the percentage content of the typical fillers in the paper industry can be determined within seconds without combustion of the samples, i.e., non-destructive.

    The quick measuring procedure leads to an almost instant availability of measuring results and therefore allows for an indeed immediate reaction to changes in the process:

    • Immense material savings can be achieved through the reduction of process fluctuations
    • The consumption of fillers can be reduced, as the immediate availability of results and the high accuracy of the ACA enables the narrowing down of the specifications for the filler content in the finished product, resulting in a much more efficiently organized process optimization (e.g. retention optimization)
    • Costs for energy of the combustion process can be saved. Thus, the use of the new measuring device guarantees a fast "return on investment" by a substantial reduction of costs in material, time, and energy

    Using standard techniques of titration, the CAS touch! determines cationic/anionic and acid/base demands of aqueous charge systems. Modern electronic components enable the high accuracy of measurement. Both, Streaming Potential (mV) and pH can be measured simultaneously, making it possible to easily determine isoelectric and flocculation points of a sample and examine the correlation between pH, titrant demand and streaming potential.

    Customer’s choice:

    The CAS touch! uses integrated high precision titrators, optionally with 1 or 2 titration systems (CAS-I touch! or CAS-II touch!), while also a version for use with external or hand titration is available to the customer (CAS-E touch!).

    Measurement / Result evaluation:

    The CAS touch! can be operated via Touch Screen, which displays the data including titration curves, optionally in combination with an external keyboard. Moreover, there is no need to adjust to a new software, as the device can also be used with the common easy-to-handle CAS PC software. The efficient testing procedures implemented in extremely user-friendly PC software make it very easy to handle. Different titration procedures are available: fixed increment titration, dynamic titration and back-titration are selectable from given procedures or are freely configurable. Default standard titration procedures and customer-specific processes can be stored in the CAS touch! via the PC software or Touch Screen. Data can be stored internally as well as externally on an USB flash drive, analyzed with PC software and exported to Excel (only two mouse clicks).

    Transport / Assembly:

    The low weight device can easily be transported in a carry-on size case, which is especially important for chemical suppliers for customer visits. After unpacking the device and connecting it to the mains voltage, the CAS touch! is ready for starting the measurement! There is no complicated assembly and no tubes are needed.

  • Produktbeschreibung:

    A PC operates the DFA. The user-friendly software controls the measurement and allows a sophisticated analysis and reporting of all results. In order to simulate different process conditions, all relevant data to configure a mixing profile is stored and used for automatic measurements.

    The user selects a mixing profile or sets all relevant mixing parameters before starting the measurement. After that, the DFA stirring chamber fills with the fiber suspension. The selected set mixing profile starts to stir the suspension as per set parameters. A dosage of chemical additives during the stirring process is possible to influence the drainage and retention process. Thru the use of audible prompts the user is notified when to introduce any chemicals. A valve opens automatically when the mixing process is finished. Filtration through selected screen starts immediately.

    Filtrate is continuously measured with approximately five sample points per second. The quantity of filtrate is shown on a graph as a function of time. The computer software allows displaying different graphs, comparing results, adding all kinds of parameters to graphs or creating comparable graphs. E.g., the quantity of dosed chemicals can be compared to the dehydration velocity. The export of all measurement data into an EXCEL-spread sheet for further analysis and data storage is possible. The instrument also has an integrated pH-measurement.

    Retention Measurement:

    The DFA system is equipped with the possibility to calculate Total Retention and Filler Retention. A filtrate is produced by the DFA system for determining the retention. Different practical filtration conditions can be simulated with a magnetic valve under the filter and different mixing gears. The filter remains clean by the mixing gear. The user has to enter the filler content or the overall solid content of the filtrate and the sample in the PC and get the total or filler retention by the DFA software.

    The devices measures the dynamic of the of the change in dimension (stretching/shrinking) of paper, board and other materials as soon as it comes to an one-sided contact with the test liquid. Especially interesting is the measurement of décor paper under one-sided liquid contact (e.g. water, melamine resin and others). In addition, the change of the dimension of gypsum board, coating base paper, newsprint or offset printing papers can be measured under one-sided contact with water or inkjet ink.

    The WSD02 replaces the classic methods to measure wet stretch behavior, which function under two-sided contact of the test liquid.

    To make sure that the necessary product quality can be reached, specifications are agreed between paper maker and converter. These specifications are bases on standard test devices, such as Cobb or Gurley. But often it happens that although the quality of the base paper or board is within the agreed specifications, issues with the gluability, printability or coating-ability occur during the converting.

    Since gluability, printability and coating-ability mainly depend on surface sizing and surface porosity, information about these two parameters are very important. But the standard test devices are not able to measure them. In comparison to this, the emtec EST is able to measure these two very important surface parameters within the time that is relevant for the converting process and by this helps to ensure a well-running converting process and the right product quality.

    The new FPA touch! Fiber Potential Analyzer combines proven methods of Zeta Potential measurement with the known great simplicity of handling and functioning of the previous FPA versions, but enhanced with new features and an immense reduction in weight and size.

    Surface charges of fibers, fillers, particles or colloidally dissolved substances in stock suspension are defined by the Zeta Potential on their surfaces. The charge of the stock suspension can be split into the colloidal and particle charge, measured with the CAS touch! Charge Analyzing System, while the fiber and filler charge is measured with the FPA touch! Fiber Potential Analyzer. All both charge levels together define the overall Zeta Potential of fiber suspensions.

    The knowledge of the fiber charges in the pulp is the key for optimized dosage of chemical aids, which should be adsorbed onto the surface of the fiber. The mostly negatively (anionic) charged fiber is adsorbing the positive (cationic) charged additives in the papermaking process. The optimized dosage of such aids always depends on the Zeta Potential within the pulp.

    The FPA touch! is designed to determine the Zeta Potential of fibers according to the HelmholtzSmoluchowski equation by simultaneously measuring conductivity, pressure and the streaming current potential. The measuring principle is based on the streaming current potential measuring method in a fiber plug. That fiber plug is automatically building up on a screen electrode in the measuring cell of the FPA by a vacuum. By periodically changing the vacuum during the measurement the charge clouds absorbed on the fibers are moving with the liquid stream and generating the streaming current potential measured by the screen and ring electrode.

    The knowledge of the fiber charge enables a correct and effective dosage of the charged chemical additives. The fiber adsorption of cationic starch, wet strength resin, and many other chemical aids can be easily measured with original samples on-site to optimize the dosage of chemicals in the wet end of the paper manufacturing process.

But often it happens that although the quality of the base paper or board is within the agreed specifications, issues with the gluability, printability or coating-ability occur during the converting.

    The touch or comfort of a nonwoven or textile product becomes a more and more important quality parameter. Different expectations of different people, especially when they are coming from completely different parts in the world make it hard to create the right mix of soft and smooth and flexible or stiff. Additionally each type of nonwoven or textile product needs its own mix, a t-shirt needs to feel different compared to a pair of jeans, a wet wipe needs to feel different compared to a baby diaper. Humans can rank or rate different qualities of a nonwoven or textile product according to the overall haptic impression. But for a human it is hard to say, why one product is preferred over the other, is it because of a softer or smoother feel or is one a bit more flexible than the other one? Those questions cannot be answered by hand tests.

    The emtec TSA Tactile Sensation Analyzer in comparison to this measures the three basic haptic parameters micro-surface variations (determine the feeling of softness), macro-surface variations (determine the feeling of smoothness) and the stiffness. Besides the three, plasticity and hysteresis, which determine the recovery, and the elasticity (elongation) are measured objectively and individually by the device. From all these parameters, a hand feel value (touch, comfort) can be calculated by algorithms. The algorithms need to be adapted to the market where the tested product is supposed to be sold and to its application. Hand feel values, calculated by adapted algorithms, often show a correlation of up to almost 100 percent to the human perception.

    Das TSA ist ein Gerät zur objektiven Messung der Weichheit, Rauigkeit und Steifigkeit von Vliesstoffen und Textilien. Neben diesen drei Parametern werden außerdem die Elastizität sowie die Plastizität und Hysterese gemessen. Die beiden letzteren bestimmen das Rücksprungverhalten von Stoffen.

    Die Messung aller Parameter findet in zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Schritten statt. Im ersten Schritt wird per Geräuschanalyse die Rauigkeit gemessen. Im zweiten Schritt werden zuerst die Weichheit des Materials mittels Geräuschanalyse und dann die Steifigkeit (inkl. Elastizität, Plastizität und Hysterese) ermittelt. Alle einzeln gemessenen Werte können außerdem zu einem sog. Hand Feel (HF) Wert, der den Griff bestimmt, durch entsprechende Algorithmen kombiniert werden.

    Das neue TSA misst – wie sein Vorgängermodell – objektiv und zuverlässig die Weichheit, Glätte und Flexibilität/Dehnbarkeit von Zwischen- und Fertigprodukten. Weiterhin können aus diesen Parametern über mathematische Modelle spezifische Handfeel-Werte (HF) berechnet werden.

    Neu hinzu kommt eine grundlegend verbesserte Möglichkeit, das Rücksprungverhalten der Probe zu bestimmen. Zusätzlich bietet das neue TSA die Möglichkeit die beiden Parameter Thermohaptik (Oberflächenwärmeleitfähigkeit) und Wärmeisolation zu messen. Durch eine Kamera kann ein hochaufgelöstes Bild der eingespannten Probe aufgenommen werden, um dem Nutzer einen visuellen Eindruck des Materials zu vermitteln sowie weitere Analysen durchzuführen. 

    Alle diese Daten werden automatisch digitalisiert und können über eine cloud-basierte Haptik-Datenbank, die Virtual Haptic Library (in Kooperation mit Black Swan Textiles, USA entwickelt), nach kundenspezifischen Vorgaben verarbeitet und gespeichert werden, so dass diese Daten zugriffsberechtigten Personen weltweit in Echtzeit zur Verfügung stehen (Qualitätssicherung und -kontrolle). Zusätzlich ermöglicht diese Virtual Haptic Library eine nach haptischen Eigenschaften katalogisierte Suche nach geeigneten Mustern weltweit.

    The new TSA measures - like its previous model - the softness, smoothness and flexibility of base and finished products objectively and reliably. Moreover, specific hand feel values (HF) can be calculated from these parameters using mathematical models.

    A fundamentally improved capability of determining the sample's springback behavior has been added to the new device. Furthermore, the new TSA offers the possibility to measure two additional parameters: thermal haptics (surface thermal conductivity) and thermal insulation. A camera can take a high-resolution image of the clamped sample in order to give the user a visual impression of the material and to carry out further analyses.

    All of this data is automatically digitized and can be processed and stored according to customer-specific requirements through a cloud-based haptic database, the Virtual Haptic Library (developed in cooperation with Black Swan Textiles, USA), making it available to authorized persons worldwide in real-time (quality assurance and control). Additionally, this Virtual Haptic Library enables a search for suitable fabrics worldwide, cataloged according to haptic properties.

    Softness, roughness and stiffness are the three basic haptic parameters, which determine the human hand feel. But, in comparison to the human hand, the device provides these three parameters as individual values. By the help of special algorithms, these three single parameters can be combined to so-called hand feel (HF) values. With the right mathematical model, a correlation to the human expectation of up to almost 100 percent is possible.

    The emtec TSA Tissue Softness Analyzer is already subject of a released TAPPI Technical Information Paper (TIP). The critically peer-reviewed technical specification document investigates the specialized measuring instrument that is able to simulate the sensory properties of the human hand when touching tissue paper products.
